System design in 2nd year? too early?

Asked by Swati Mishra 1 month ago 2 answers 6 votes

Seniors say freshers don't need system design. But a senior got "design a URL shortener" in a startup interview last year. Should I start or stick to DSA + core subjects for now?

Mostly DSA + OS/DBMS/CN for now, that's what you'll definitely get asked. But spend one weekend on the basics: load balancer, caching, SQL vs NoSQL, horizontal vs vertical scaling, CDN. That's enough to not freeze on a URL shortener question. Nobody expects more from a fresher.

I got "what happens when you type a url in browser" in my fresher interview. so CN basics matter more than system design honestly
