Stop bluffing in technical interviews

Asked by Farhan Ali 1 month ago 4 answers 18 votes

Something I learned the hard way.

In my first few interviews whenever I didn't know something I'd say something confidently and hope. Interviewers take interviews every day, they know immediately. And after that they doubt everything else you said too.

What works much better: "I haven't worked with X, but since it's similar to Y, I'd guess it works like this... is that right?" I did this for a Docker networking question last month, interviewer just explained it and we moved on. No damage.

Guessing is fine in MCQs. Not in interviews.

100%. Also they're usually checking how you think, not if you know every tool

did this for a kubernetes question, interviewer literally said "good, at least you don't pretend"

@Ankit true. practising mock interviews helps with that, the first few are always bad
